Summary: The name “Azeri” is thought to have come from the fourth century ruler, Atropat, who governed the area that is now northwestern Iran. However, it may have been derived from azer, the Persian word for fire. They are Shia Muslims like the Persian Iranians, but their language is Turkic. The highest number of Azeris live in Iran and Azerbaijan. In fact, Azerbaijan is named after them. They also live in Eastern European countries, and small numbers live in the United States, Sweden and Germany. There are small numbers of Azeris living throughout the Central Asian nations, including Afghanistan. Shia Muslims understand that even the righteous can face injustice and martyrdom. They might be more open to teaching about the death and resurrection of Christ than other Muslims.
Obstacles: Until the twentieth century, most Azeri identified themselves as Muslims rather than Azerbaijani or Turks. They believe that being a “spiritual community of Islam” was much more important than being a nation. This suggests a barrier to the gospel of Christ alone.

Summary: In the 1700s, ethnic Vainakh Chechens from Caucasian Chechnya came to be called Kist by the Georgians. In time, they adopted Georgian surnames and learned Georgian along with Chechen. Today there are six Kist towns. After two centuries, they still preserve much of their original culture and traditions. They are a very small Muslim minority group in western Russia.
Obstacles: They lack a critical mass of Jesus followers. The vast majority are Muslims; not open to the gospel.
How reach: Friendship evangelism by Georgian Christians and Scripture distribution in Georgian might be effective to reach them for Christ.
Pray for church: Pray that Georgian churches would see a need to evangelize the Kist people and act on that need.

Summary: Lezgin was originally a Turkish term meaning "highland resident." By the 7th century, Islamic power had swept into the region of the Lezgin people, and over the past 1,000 years has exerted huge influence into their society. Traditionally the Lezgin were a pastoral people who raised livestock in the high grasslands.
Obstacles: The Lezgin culture is highly defensive against outsiders. It is very difficult for those outside their communities to be accepted or trusted.
How reach: Resources like Bible portions and the JESUS Film can be made available to the Lezgin people of Georgia.
Pray for church: A few Lezgins outside of Georgia have found salvation in Jesus Christ, but there aren't enough of them to form even one fellowship of their own. Pray for a Holy Spirit directed Lezgin fellowship that will show the way to the cross. Pray for the Lezgin believers to shine as bright lights among their clans.

Summary: The Meskhetian Turks are a Turkish people originally from a part of southern Georgia that borders Turkey. However, under Stalin's policies during the time of the Soviet Union, the Meskhetian Turks were forcefully deported to Central Asia, where they experienced discrimination and civil rights abuses. When they were finally permitted to return to their homeland, Georgia did not allow them to resettle there. Today these people live in several countries, with the largest population in Russia. They are Muslim, but many of their traditions contain a mixture of Muslim, Caucasian and Russian elements.
Obstacles: Lack of prayer and lack of obedience to the command of Christ to preach the good news to all creation continues to slow the advance of the gospel.
How reach: Georgia has many Christians, mostly Orthodox but some are evangelicals. Please pray that some of these Christians will gain an interest in carrying the gospel message to the Meskhetians in their own country.
Pray for church: There are no known Christians among the Meskhetians in any country of residence.

Summary: The Laz are native to the Black Sea coastal regions of Turkey and Georgia. One of the chief tribes of the ancient kingdom of Colchis, the Laz were initially early adopters of Christianity and most of them subsequently converted to Sunni Islam during Ottoman rule of the Caucasus in the 16th century. There is a very small number of Christian Laz in Georgia who were converted to Christianity from Islam. Laz identity in Georgia has largely merged with a Georgian identity and the meaning of "Laz" is seen as merely a regional category.
Obstacles: The Laz of Georgia may have become especially protective of their Islamic faith, since they are a minority in Georgia.
How reach: The predominately Muslim Laz people in Georgia live in a land that is largely Orthodox Christian. Pray that committed Georgian Christians will be given a burden to share Christ with the Laz in their country.
Pray for church: There are a small handful of Laz in Georgia who would identify themselves as Christians. Pray these people will rest fully in the finished work of Christ on the cross, and not mix in a religion of works. Pray they will gain a heart to share Christ with their fellow Laz, in both Georgia and Turkey.
