Summary: A palace coup in 1989 brought down the communist dictator. They reinstated Turkish names, Turks were allowed to speak Turkish openly, and Bulgaria lifted restrictions on Islamic religious practices. The cultural rights of Turks are now generally well respected, but they are disadvantaged relative to the Bulgarians in terms of income, presence in the professions and in the commercial sector. Because of religious, linguistic, and social differences, Turks have not often intermarried with the local Bulgarians. If Turkish men marry outside their community, the usually chose Muslim, non-Turkish women. The export-oriented agricultural business is where most Rumelian Turks now work.
Obstacles: Christianity is viewed by the Turks in Bulgaria as the religion of someone else.
How reach: Turks will need to hear of the glory and goodness of the Lord through the JESUS Film and other audio and visual materials. These can be distributed to them or downloaded.

Summary: The name Pomak means "people who have suffered," which is an accurate description. Throughout history, they have been considered the outcasts of Bulgarian society. In 1948, the Communists began to remove people they thought to be disloyal to their regime. By 1950, the Pomak were the new target. For many years, they lived isolated from other peoples. However, during the last century, modernization has forced them to come into contact with the outside world. The Pomak economy is based on agriculture.
Obstacles: The Pomak are virtually all Muslim and their religion makes up an integral part of their ethnic identity. It will be difficult for them to accept Christ without feeling like they are turning their backs on their ethnic identity, something that has already been damaged during the last 100 years.
How reach: There is some degree of religious freedom in Bulgaria, a country with a Christian heritage. Believers can take Christ to Pomak Muslims.
Pray for p g: Pray for student outreach among the Pomak. Ask the Lord of the harvest to send forth laborers to work among the Pomak. Ask God to create a hunger within the hearts of the Pomak to know the Truth. Pray for a movement to Christ among the Pomak that will result in many blessings for this ethnic group.

Summary: Bulgaria is a Slavic country that was settled by Bulgars in the Middle Ages. Historically, Jews have been there since Roman times. In 1339, Bulgarian King Johann Alexander married a Jewess, Sarah, who was known as Queen Theodora. A century later, in 1492, Spain expelled all Jews; some went to Bulgaria. Hence, Bulgaria's Jews are Sephardic, meaning Spanish Jews. As Sephardim, Bulgarian Jews may speak Ladino as well as Bulgarian. Most Bulgarian Jews are elderly. In 1997, the Jewish community sought to revitalize Judaism through education and the introduction of Hebrew into public schools as a foreign language. However, there are still only two synagogues.
Obstacles: Revitalization of Jewish communities may prove to be either an obstacle or a bridge of God for Bulgarian Jews. If the gospel is viewed as a threat to their “Jewishness,” it will be an obstacle. Traditional evangelism is usually viewed this way by Jewish populations.
How reach: Christ followers can present Jesus to the Bulgarian Jews using Jewish cultural forms.
Pray for p g: Pray that the Bulgarian Orthodox Church would become mission-minded and experience a Holy Spirit revitalization. May they actively seek the salvation of Bulgarian Jews. Pray that Messianic Jews would seek out and witness to Bulgarian Jews.
